Do you remember the story where Jesus challenged injustice, flipping over tables in the temple in his righteous anger? That was Jesus being a prophet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you remember when Jesus withdrew to lonely places to spend time connecting with his Father in prayer to get insight and direction? That was Jesus being a prophet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you remember when Jesus had a word of knowledge for the woman at the well, confronted her sin, and emphasized worshipping the Father in spirit and truth? That was Jesus being a prophet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Depending on where you grew up and which churches you\u2019ve been a part of, it\u2019s highly likely that you were rarely – if ever – taught specifically that Jesus was a prophet.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s funny cause if you have had conversations with Muslims they are very quick to acknowledge and honor Jesus as a prophet (which is a great bridge-building conversation by the way, to then ask what the job of a prophet is, and then quote truth of John 14:6 and ask whether what this prophet said is true.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there is often stigma associated with the word prophet, and maybe the first thing you think of is \u201cforetelling the future.\u201d But when we look throughout Scripture, that function is peripheral. Primarily, a prophet is someone who speaks on God\u2019s behalf. It\u2019s about listening, obeying and speaking.<\/p>\n

For starters, let\u2019s look briefly at some instances where Jesus was explicitly named as a prophet.<\/p>\n

The Samaritan Woman at the Well<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSir,\u201d the woman said, \u201cI can see that you are a prophet.<\/strong>” -John 4:19<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Triumphal Entry<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAnd when he (Jesus) entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, \u201cWho is this?\u201d And the crowds said, \u201cThis is the prophet<\/strong> Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.\u201d -Matthew 21:11<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the Road to Emmaus<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThen one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, \u2018Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?\u2019<\/p>\n

And he (Jesus) said to them, \u2018What things?\u2019 And they said to him, \u2018Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet<\/strong> mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.\u2019\u2019\u2019 -Luke 24:18-20<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus Living it Out<\/h2>\n

Okay, so Jesus was identified as a prophet, but how did he live it out? I gave some brief examples at the beginning (challenging injustice, spending time in prayer, etc); here are a few specific passages in Scripture:<\/p>\n

Jesus communicates in relationship<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMy sheep listen<\/strong> to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.\u201d -John 10:27<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus calls people to hear and obey<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIf anyone has ears to hear,<\/strong> let him hear.\u201d -Mark 4:23 (and many other places)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus calls people to repentance<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

The time<\/strong> is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent<\/strong> and believe in the gospel.\u201d -Mark 1:15<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus prioritizes prayer and worship<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn these days he went out to the mountain to pray<\/strong>, and all night he continued in prayer<\/strong> to God.\u201d -Luke 6:12<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth<\/strong>, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.\u201d -John 4:23<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus confronts evil<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cJesus reprimanded him. \u201cBe quiet! Come out of the man,\u201d<\/strong> he ordered. At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.\u201d -Mark 1:25-26<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.\u201d<\/strong> -1 John 3:8<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

These are all examples of Jesus\u2019 prophetic ministry. And this leads us to know Jesus deeper \u2014 this aspect of his character and his ministry \u2014 so as to become more like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
